Diplomats Explore the Mount Vernon Estate

Nine diplomats (from Japan, Germany, Ivory Coast, Libya, and Italy) and one volunteer toured Mount Vernon’s mansion with a guide, visited the museum, walked the grounds and enjoyed lunch. The tour included the mansion, outbuildings, gardens, tomb, farm, trails, the distillery and gristmill. The visit included the Education Center exhibit: “Mount Vernon: An American Icon.” George Washington took over management of Mount Vernon in 1754. He then went on to renovate and expand it over the following 45 years. The architectural features he chose reflected his position as a Virginia gentleman and, later, as the president of the nation.
